I teach 7th grade, but your question isn't grade specific. Last year, I
began the year requiring students to read 100 pages per week. However, it
became quickly evident that students were reading at different levels, and
100 pages in one book might be like 150 in another book. So, I now use
minutes. Students read 20 minutes per day, for a total of 100 minutes per
week. They don't have to get a parent signature unless I become suspicious
of their reading activity; ie. they can't tell me what they've been reading
about even though they recorded 200 minutes on a certain book. If I start
suspecting them of cheating, then they have silent lunch and they have to
read while they eat, or they have to come into my room during homeroom and
read. They hate this.
