We have often talked about poetry on this list, and how to teach
it--here are
two websites that were on Riverdeep's Thursday Classroom Flyer. They
are both
from the Yale-New Haven Teacher Institute and seem geared for high
school, but
we members of the Lit Listserv are gifted at adapting lesson ideas.
Maybe you already know
about the Teacher Institute, but if not, it's a source that can help
us add
richness, relevance, and rigor to our curricula. (I don't know why,
but i just
hate that expression, "add rigor"--makes me think of rigor mortis, but
it's the
latest educational buzz word in this district!) Well, I digress--here
are the
URLs

A JOURNAL OF POETRY:

Four lesson plans explore the formats, vocabulary, and im-
agery of poetry. Guidelines for teaching poetry are also
included, along with tips on how to experience poetry.

WORKING WITH POETRY:
http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/1985/1/85.01.06.x.html

Taking an actor's approach to poetry, students will learn
how to experience and respond to poems. Several theater
games and exercises are included, as well as a great sel-
ection of possible poems to explore.
