The young teachers I meet are so programmed and
they must use a required text, teach in a prescribed
way, and are always under the gun to present some new
data in some new fangled way.

I don't know about your district, Alice, but in mine
most of the "young" teachers are temporary employees
who can be dismissed without cause. Protesting, or
even mild complaining, can result in dismissal. I am
not young, since I started teaching at the age of 45.
However, out of a pool of 60 of us who started
teaching four years ago, there are only eight left.
We were recruited out of high tech to help fill a
teacher shortage BEFORE the mass exodus of people from
Silicon Valley (taking their kids with them). Santa
Clara county had 10,000 layoffs during a six month
period in 2001 alone. Over the past four years, the
number of families here has dropped like a stone.
We've closed two elementary schools and one middle
school.

I presume you're a permanent employee?
