So I think part of it is that for Running REcord, the teacher does NOT have
a copy of the text and since there are so many words, it would be really
difficult to get all the checks down. It is more helpful to have a copy of

Thank you for clarifying this. When I wrote 'take a running record on a short portion of the text', I was referring to just marking and analyzing the errors...a miscue analysis. I used the term 'running record' inaccurately!
And, I only do this with struggling students reading below grade level, to try to determine what is difficult for the student. A miscues analysis helps me know if I should focus my instruction initially on surface structure or comphrehension strategies.
