[LIT] Book chat: Tweens

Bill and I have pretty much agreed on using a listserv for the chat. People
are used to this format.

We had talked about using discussion board. A blog format was another
possibility. The important factor is that we want to encourage the flow of
ideas during the chat so the listserv format seems the best for this group
at this time.

Again, Bill will update you next week with details on how it will work. At
that time we'll try to include everyone who expressed interest in the
breakout list. There will be a URL that will allow people to self-register
as well.

Some of you might remember that we are flirting with "bandwidth" issues for
this listserv. While you are looking at this one message, please remember
that this "one" message is delivered to over 300 people. Our hosting service
has a hard limit of 1000 messages per hour. We have exceeded this limit a
number of times in the last two weeks.

The issue of a separate "chat" using the main list is going to be a concern.
At this time we simply can't have a breakout group of say 20 people whose
messages are sent out to over 300 people. Our listserv might be effectively
shutdown. Those of you that just want to "lurk" on the book chat should
contact Bill so that he will include you on the chat.

Even if we did have the bandwidth, I think the more effective model for
discussions is to allow groups to "breakout" high interest discussions to a
separate area.

Bill and I will let everyone know how the book chat will be set up. Even if
you don't contact Bill, you'll have the option of "self-registering" for the
chat.

Respectfully, why?  Although I cannot participate right now, I was very much
looking forward to eavsdropping.  Why not host
the chat and make sure that participants take care with the subject line.
