Bill, I just read this too (by Sarah Weeks) and thought it was very 
good.  Many of my kids have read it and every time they see it, they 
see "I loved that book."  It's about a girl whose mother has a "bum 
brain" and only 23 words.  After Heidi finds a photograph, she goes in 
search of information, especially what her mother means by the word 
"soof."  It's published by Scholastic - you might want to take a look 
at some reviews.
