While this isn't post-communist, it is post WWII (early 1950's). I
love I AM DAVID (formerly titled North to Freedom - author (I think)
Ellen Holm). It's also a movie by Walden which I think is beautifully
done. Lots of visuals of the countryside, lots of facial expressions.
You can get info at walden.com including some great lesson plans for
comparing movie and book and a good map. It's set in post-WWII Soviet
camp in Bulgaria where David grows up. He escapes with the help of
camp official (you'll find out why) and begins his trek to Denmark
where he's been told to go. It's a great book to discuss what freedom
is as it is revealed thru the eyes of someone who has never known it.
A broader than usual definition of freedom - the ability to smile, who
to trust, the capacity for appreciating beauty, etc.
