What other techniques would you offer?

I teach high school and I still use the silly poems of Lansky and Prelutsky.
Most often, my students recognize all the words, which is what I want (if
my ESOL kids do not recognize a word, they can hear it and practice the next
round). This is not the time to expect them to use decoding skills. We read
it together as a class (from the board) then I challenge them to read it
faster a second time, third time, etc. They have a blast because the poems are
fun and easy. I started the year off with "Homework, Oh Homework" and they
loved it!!!!
