In my school, kids have independent reading 4
periods/week. We don't use whole class books, because
kids are all at different reading levels. The
reading teachers in my school teach reading strategies
which kids then practice during reading time. The
teacher confers with individual kids while the others
are reading, jotting notes on post-its, choosing books
from the library, etc. For us, reading during
school (and conferring with kids while they read) is
the core of our reading program. If you are
interested in learning more about reading workshop,
you might try looking at "Mosaic Of Thought" or Nancie
Atwell's "In the Middle."
I'm curious about why you want them to be reading two
different books at the same time? That seems to me
like a lot for 5th graders to keep track of.
