I'm coming into this conversation late. I'm sorry if I'm repeating...
Toomey mentioned picture dictionaries. What about having the child make her own? The pair of you (or a student buddy) could walk through the school and/or classroom and take photos of things of interest to the child. People, objects, actions, places.
