Highlighter tape is great for this also. It comes on a roll like scotch tape, but is removable (like post it notes) and is brightly colored for highlighting, My second graders used to find spelling patterns, punctuation, characters etc. by sticking highlighter tape right on the page of the book. I learned the hard way--kids need a pull tab (a selection of tape folded back on itself for easy removal) I stuck 3-5 pieces on a laminated index card and kept them in a basket.

Use different-colored highlighters to have students identify places in their writing where various conventions are used....If unable to find a place, could they accept the challenge to revise and find somewhere in their writing where they might include the convention.....?
