[LIT] Discussion on Homework

  I found it interesting that you have shown some bias here. You suggest that most parents are hurrying kids to get them to bed or doing work for them. You also suggest students have 2-3 hours a night. I have not found this to be true for the majority of students. 
 In grades 6-8 our school limits homework to 90 minutes. I teach ELA and my students frequently have homework. It's often reading in their books. Other times it is finishing a writing draft or revision. I have only 45-50 minutes a day to teach reading, grammar, writing, and vocabulary. I often have students finish work started in class at home. 
 I often see students wasting time in class, studyhall, or waiting around after school for practice or pickup. I also have seen students wait until 8:00 to start their work. Others have been "chatting" on their computer, unknown to the parents, saying it is homework. 
 Does your school have guidelines? Are the students teamed? Does the "team" have common planning time to discuss homework and interdisciplinary units? Have the teachers on the team been contacted about this issue? Is it a daily occurrence or every once in a while? Just something to consider.

  To the members of this listserv, I wanted to know your opinion on homework. Do you think that teachers today give to much homework to children? Do you think that it is good to have children doing homeowrk for 2-3 hours everynight, having parents hurrying them up or doing it for them so they can get to bed on time and have their homework done?
