I agree with Heather that Wong's book was not that helpful to me. The
wonderful teacher
from my school who conducted a short session on classroom management
for new teachers
said that Wong advocated a very teacher-centered approach to
discipline, and that this is
maybe more useful for the primary grades than middle school.
We use Capturing Kids' Hearts at our school. It is a very cooperative
form of discipline, with
students learning to be accountable for their actions and with teachers
learning to be better leaders....
how to establish relationships with and encourage students, make them
feel important, etc. We
use social contracts, etc.
Responsive Classroom is fabulous, though, if you are looking for books
to purchase.....Rules in School,
the Morning Meeting Book, etc. I also like Cooperative Discipline,
Maintaining Sanity in the Classroom,
and Life in a Crowded Place.
