thanks for the information caroline.  actually, i teach this  stuff in 
undergrad!  lol!  i guess it is because i am an adjunct at  FAU and I spend most of 
my time in a 'real' classroom, so i pass on a lot of  practical information to 
my students.  but you are right, not much is  taught in college....practical 
experience is the best teacher.  i had a lot  of students thank me when we 
were done with the course because i told them what  works and what does not.  so 
much politics at the college level.   everyone wanting their books to be used 
and some of them have not been in a  classroom in 20 years.  not all, but most 
that i have run across.
