fabulous idea. i love the idea of having students prepare for whole class discussions in advance. What about having a weekly discussion day, provide students with questions for a specific section and set aside a day for reflection in writingand/or speaking? maybe even bi-weekly if type is short.
forming lit circles/book clubs can almost eleminate the book problem. the only book my classes read as a whole class is holes, and i use this at the beginning of the year because everyone seems to know and love this story. we have such a high turn over, that i need something students can step into at any point. i am, however, thinking of reading more books together this coming year.
thanks for the great ideas. i'm soaking all of this experience and wisdom up--like a sponge:)
