Novel Projects:

In the past I have done this project with the novel "Hatchet" to great success. It certainly could be adapted to "Holes" and perhaps other novels.

After reading Hatchet students were asked to design a board game / survival game. The board became the setting of the story. The object was to overcome the obstacles that were thrown Brian's way and the winner was the first to be rescued by the plane. My gifted students did amazing projects. I also let them work in pairs for a higher developed game. As a result, the games were creative, and wowed me. One pair created the Monoply Game of Hatchet. I think it was worthy of being sent into Parker Brothers (or is it Milton Bradley?). What was integrated into this project was comprehensionn of the novel and the plot / setting / conflict / resolution, but it was also a good way to teach the class how to write directions which is one of those lesser known standards in LA.

For my Basic students, we whole class designed a Concentration or Matching Game and they could create the cards and the board as well. They also had to write directions.

As a result, after the novel objective test, the students brought their games in and we all spent the day playing each others games. They absolutely loved this project!

Other Novel Projects:
Animal Story - Flip Book or Folded Book / How to care and feed a _______. (Example: Where the Red Fern Grows - Coon Hound, or even a raccoon.

Mysery Story - Another Boardgame based on the game 'Clue'.

Biography / Autobiography - Come dressed as the famous person and be interviewed by a panel.

Biography / Autobiography in a Can - Decorate a coffee can as the famous person. Inside place 10 cards on which there are facts and details about the life of the person.

Hmmm . . I know there is more, but I really need to get the laundry done. Later.
