I had a group of struggling readers who read over a million words this year.
We read using books on tape , reading daily and moving quickly through the
books the way we would read a book we were really into with a pasion. I
dealt basically with usiversal themes, dynamic and static characters, and so
on... I did not turn the books into " workbook--- fill in the blank
handouts." We used journals to touch on the topics I previously listed. Here
are some of the books we read: The Skin I'm IN; Taking Sides;Tangerine;Door
in the Wall; Catherine Called Birdy; Darnell Rock Reporting;
Downsiders;Sparrowhawk Red...and there were several others. The kids really
became readers... began reading on their own... and I gave each one a
"Million Word Reader" award at the end of the year... spiffy awards with
ribbons and much ceremony.
