I just read the article & would like to put in my 2 cents.
I agree that it's a good article to bring to the table in support of SSR. In
addition, I like the 'no movement' policy. I never had too much of a problem
with this when I taught middle level ELA, but it's a good support to make
the kids accountable for finding that book at another time during the day if
necessary. I particularly liked the "Thinking about my reading: Predicting"
sheet. It helped me think more clearly about teaching where our predictions
come from, and I know I'll be using this with my Title I readers this coming
year. The pair/share/rap is a good accountability piece, as well. These are
useful in particular when thinking about helping to move those students
along further who who fake read or let their eyes, not their brain, do their
reading.
