I was originally introduced to TQR when I was teaching 4th grade. I didn't use many of the lessons as written, but was able to use some strategies (I didn't get it til the end of the year). I did attempt to use it in 3rd...had to do LOTS of revision and pick different texts, but again the strategies worked (just make sure you read lessons BEFORE your teach it, you do need to rework to teach to lower grades).

This year I taught 6th and the lessons were wonderful for this group. Like Ellen said, they are engaging and the texts used are great examples (but don't let that stop you from using your own example if you have one).

A great resource, if you didn't know already, is RealWritingTeachers (a Yahoo group for Writers Workshop). There are lots of people who use TQR and could give more input.

Sarah,
I've used Fletcher's Teaching the Qualities of Writing in sixth grade for
the past two years. I haven't found it too elementary.
