I recently used a strategy with adult readers in which I presented a brief
nonfiction article (which I had cut and paste from the internet) so that in
the first column of a three column table a paragraph at a time appeared.
The second column was labeled summarize, with the third column labeled 'Why
is it important?" The purpose was to show teachers how to connect summaries
to determining importance and then through their shared discussion,
demonstrate how it helped to deepen their understanding and slow down their
thinking, as we need kids to do--especially with more problematic texts.
