[LIT] Middle School Reading Levels (Question)

How does your MIDDLE SCHOOL determine incoming reading levels for your 6th
graders?  

I'm not satisfied with the results of the written multiple choice test our
kids take that determines their starting level, but I also don't know what's
"out there" that's a more valid instrument.  My former elementary school
used STAR and AR.
