We try to reinforce that there is an academic language acceptable for school

Often this means having the students rewrite assignments to reflect a more
formal level of language, or the teacher paraphrasing what a student says to
model the academic language.
This is always a quandary. I have kids add to their personal editing sheets
to check for IM language. I tell them "OMG I am SSAT( so sick and
tired!) of IM Speak showing up in FPs(final papers)! However, a fun activity
to do is to incorporate that into the classic lesson, Write a formal letter
of apology to a homeowner explaining what happened when your soccer ball
went through their window and then send a electronic message to your friend
explaining the same event. Compare and contrast the two writing pieces.
