--how accurate do you feel your initial assessments
were? How helpful have they been in shaping your instruction, and in
what
ways (if any) have they helped you shape your instruction?
Initial assessments are always hard, as (I think) Lynn said, kids are nervous, they've most likely not read most/all summer long and are just plain out of school practice.
This week I'm going to be trying to do some IRIs on kiddos that scored low. We have conferences and I want to make sure I'm really targeting their needs.
To address spelling...I need to make a plug for Words Their Way. It really has been the best system for targeting where kids needs are and teaching them at their own instructional level that I've seen. It's not traditional, so it can be hard to manage if you like to do whole group instruction, but I highly recommend looking into it.
