My two cents......for my 7th graders I like reading with excerpts of film,
if available. Sometimes youtube.com has appropriate video excerpts (besides
other "stuff" that is not appropriate-so becareful). We used it for the
"Rikki Tikki Tavi" story we just taught by Rudyard Kipling. We read the
story in sections, they responded in interactive reading workbooks, then
showed the flip clip, then the next section, etc. The students really came
alive with the film versions. Those who hate reading were very engaged and
their writing responses were much improved.
My husband and I just saw "Wicked" on Broadway and a New Yorker in the
elevator said to read the book, he claimed it was even better! A great idea
for the gifted student, in my humble opinion. Lucinda
