[LIT] detentions & social literacy

Hi!

In my school, we view discipline as a way of learning to make good
decisions and build strong relationships. So detention might work if
integrated into both parts of that process, but it is less likely than
other approaches to work well because it is inherently an external
motivation and doesn't often cause kids to build that internal motivation
which leads to honest changes in behavioral patterns. Sorry this sounds
kind of clinical, but hopefully you all get the drift :-)

Hmm, is this another literacy - say, "social literacy"? How do we teach
social literacy in our schools? Should we?!
