Hi!
Hey Mary, of course I recognize your name! It sounds like you've got some
great ideas going there. We have a number of literacy coaches in this
group who may have some helpful suggestions.
To answer your specific question, my students are required to write in the
following genres during 7th grade: persuasive, compare-contrast,
informational brochure, research paper, script, poetry, literary analysis.
Most if not all choose to write short stories for their independent
writing. I am 100% in agreement with you that writing in one genre
inevitably informs and improves writing in other genres. Although I'd kind
of remarked on this, I didn't realize how important this was until I
noticed that the checklists the kids were developing to evaluate each
genre had incredible crossover.
