Great question. Because I do have students work in class on projects,
I can keep an eye on progress. However, I also use plan of action
sheets in which students list the steps needed to complete a project.
I often do this as a class on the overhead. This helps students who
can be overwhelmed see how to break down a project and determine a
timeline. I do however always have a specific due date. Outside of
school many students are loaded with extra curricular activities. We
try to schedule these items into their planners as well so homework
can be scheduled. Some would say this is enabling but I find my 8th
graders need little handholding and go on to the high school with some
pretty good skills.
