HI everyone,
Last year I went to a workshop about Precision Reading. (www.precisionreading.com) It was presented by a gal that was teaching grade 6 in a school for kids with learning disabilities that is very reputable in this area. It is strictly for fluency, but apparently the research shows growth in comprehension with some kids as well.
It is pretty clinical but it only takes 15 minutes a day, and you use passages from the students content areas so it helps build vocabulary in those subjects as well. With the purchase of the manuals (around $100 - Canadian), you have the rights to use it with as many kids as you need. The reading passages are not included as curriculum seems to change regularly here, but the gal that presented was more than willing to share her grade 6 passages with anyone that needed them. (They tell you in the manual how to find your own passages and level them). It is a one-on-one intervention. It could easily be done by an educational assistant who was trained.
I haven't tried it as I had 30 kids and no assistance last year. But I would like to!
Good luck!
Tracey
